Cops say man's claim about killing Pearl false

A man who claimed he murdered kidnapped The Wall Street Journal correspondent Daniel Pearl changed his statement saying he claimed so to embarrass family members who had neglected him.

Earlier, an agency report quoting police officials identified the man as Adnan, saying he turned himself in to the newspaper Khabrain in the eastern city of Lahore on Thursday.

The chief editor of the newspaper, Zia Shahid, handed him over to police.

According to Shahid, the man claimed he killed Pearl on a boat off Karachi, where the journalist was abducted January 23.

A videotape received last month by the US Consulate in Karachi confirmed Pearl was dead.

Four suspects have been arrested, including the alleged mastermind, Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh.

Pearl's body has not been found, and other suspects remain at large.
