US bombing kills 40 people in southern Afghanistan

United States fighter jets mistakenly bombed a wedding party in southern Afghanistan late on Sunday night killing at least 40 people, an Afghan government official told a news agency on Monday.

The Afghan Islamic Press, meanwhile, said over 100 people have died in bombing.

"According to our reports 40 people have been killed and another 60 to 70 people wounded, in Dehrawad district of Uruzgan province," an official in Uruzgan told the new agency.

Uruzgan is north of the main southern province of Kandahar.

Meanwhile, Afghan leader Hamid Karzai has appointed a four-member high-level team to investigate the bombing.

President Karzai, in a decree announced over state radio, said he wanted a 'comprehensive investigation' into last night's bombing as well as emergency assistance sent to the families of the victims.

The probe team includes Afghan Border Affairs Minister Mohammad Aref Nurzai, Deputy Internal Affairs Minister Gholam Ghaws Naseri, the broadcast said.

The US chief military spokesman in Afghanistan, Lieutenant Colonel Roger King, has already offered condolences for the families of victims and announced a separate military inquiry was under way.

"We understand there were some civilian casualties during the operation," he said in a press briefing broadcast on CNN from Bagram Air Base, north of the capital Kabul.
