Sikh London cop wins additional compensation

H S Rao in London

Police sergeant Gurpal Virdi, an ethnic Indian, who was wrongly sacked after being accused of sending racist hate mail by London's metropolitan police has been awarded 90,000 pound for injury to his feelings in addition to the earlier compensation of 150,000 pounds for his arrest and racial discrimination four years ago.

Besides the additional financial benefit, 43-year old Virdi who has roots in Punjab, has also received an apology from Sir John Stevens, commissioner of the metropolitan police.

Virdi, who is to return to the metropolitan police shortly, said: "This is the end of a long and extremely traumatic process for me and my family. This settlement means I can get back to what I'm best at - high quality policing that serves my community."
