US rebuts Musharraf; says Osama responsible for Sept 11 attacks

Rebutting Pakistan President Musharraf's attempt to play down Osama bin Laden's responsibility for the September 11 terror attacks on the United States, National Security Council spokesman Sean McCormack has said videotapes of the Al Qaeda leader gloating over the strikes left no doubt over his role.

"The videotape shown worldwide in which bin Laden gloats over the attacks ... leaves no doubt about his leading role in planning the destruction," McCormack told reporters at the Foreign Press Centre of the state department in Washington on Wednesday.

In an interview to the New Yorker magazine published on Monday, Musharraf had said: "I did not think it possible that Osama sitting up there in the mountains could do it."

"He was perhaps the sponsor, the financier, the motivating force. But those who executed it were much more modern. They knew the US, they knew aviation. I don't think he (bin Laden) has the intelligence or the minute planning. The planner was someone else," Musharraf said.

McCormack said the US was committed to the destruction of the Al Qaeda and Taliban and the reconstruction of Afghanistan.
