Harkat-ul-Mujahideen ordered to shut offices in Pakistan

The Pakistan-based Harkat-ul-Mujahideen (HuM), one of the largest militant organisations operating in Jammu and Kashmir, on Saturday announced that it was closing down its offices in Pakistan following orders to that effect by the authorities.

Harkat members were seen removing their belongings from their main office in Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Terrorist organisations based in Pakistan have been facing the heat ever since terrorists struck at New York's World Trade Centre and the Pentagon in Washington. The HuM is among those that have been declared as terrorist organisations by the United States.

Earlier on Monday, its assets, along with those of 26 other organisations and individuals, were frozen by US President George Bush for their connections with terrorism-related activities or activists.

Pakistan has offered to cooperate with the US in its efforts to bring the perpetrators of the September 11 bombings to book and the latest order is in keeping with its commitments to the US.
