Mullah Omar appoints commander-in-chief

Taleban chief Mullah Mohammed Omar has appointed his trusted aide Jalaluddin Haqqani as the commander-in-chief, as the Afghan militia prepares for possible American military strikes.

Haqqani, one of the senior army commanders who played a prominent role during the Afghan war against the Soviet forces, has been asked to establish his command base at Khost, about 260 km southwest of the Pakistani border town of Kohat, media reports said on Saturday.

Haqqani has been given the top job as he has about 60,000 militiamen working under him along with 70 stinger missiles, which were distributed by the US during the Afghan war, the Dawn said.

His appointment is considered to be significant as he belonged to an Afghan tribe that has large number of fighters in its ranks.
