Pakistan sends another team
to Afghanistan for talks

K J M Varma in Islamabad

Pakistan has sent a delegation of pro-Taleban Islamic leaders to Afghanistan to prevail upon the ruling militia to hand over terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden, the prime suspect in the recent terror attacks in New York and Washington.

The team comprising Pakistan's top Islamic leaders, including Jamat-e-Islami chief Qazi Hussain, Jamat-e-Ulema chief Sammi ul Haq and Jamat-e-Islam leader Moulana Fazlur Rehman, would meet Taleban leader Mullah Omar on Friday in yet another effort to prevent a war between the US and the militia.

The three leaders met with Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf on Wednesday.

The Islamic parties in Pakistan are heading an agitation under an umbrella group -- the Afghan Defence Council -- against Pakistan's support to the US in the latter's fight against Afghanistan.

It was, however, not clear whether the Pakistani delegation has any definite proposals for Omar, who has declined all Pakistani overtures to get bin Laden extradited.
