India for concerted action against terrorists

India has said that terrorism and armed conflict posed a dramatic and violent threat to the world and stressed on the need for global co-operation and concerted action against terrorists and those who abet, finance, train and harbour them.

"Condemnations do not touch terrorism. Its roots run deep and wide. And they can be uprooted only through concerted action," Ambassador to the United Nations Kamlesh Sharma told the General Assembly on Wednesday.

He also stressed on the necessity of finalising the Comprehensive Convention against International Terrorism, which was initiated by India and is now under negotiations.

"Its early adoption will provide the framework for international action against terrorism," he said.

Otherwise, he warned, the cancer of terrorism would spread and bringing more deaths and destruction to more countries.

Expressing outrage at the "barbaric and senseless" terrorist attacks on the United States, Sharma said India had the bitter experience of the toll terrorism exacted.

"Over the decades, tens of thousand of our citizens at work, at prayer, in schools, in hospitals, have died at the hands of terrorists," he said.
