US strikes will be legitimate: EU

The leaders of the European Union on Friday said that any retaliatory strikes by the United States in response to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre and Pentagon on September 11, in which thousands died, would be legitimate. However, they cautioned that the attacks should be targeted and carried out under the aegis of the United Nations.

The leaders also agreed that retaliatory actions could also be directed against "states that aid, support or provide refuge to terrorists", the Prime Minister of Belgium, Guy Verhofstadt, said.

Belgium holds the presidency of the EU, which is rotated every year.

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder reaffirmed that the EU states were ready to back "necessary military actions" in response to the attacks on the US.
