Taleban may consider handing over bin Laden to China or Saudi Arabia

Sheela Bhatt in Delhi

The Shura, Afghanistan's grand council of clerics, will not hand over Osama bin Laden to America or to any European country.

According to high level sources in Islamabad, Mullah Mohammed Omar, the Taleban's supreme leader, told the Pakistan delegation, led by Inter-Services Intelligence director Lieutenant General Mahmood Ahmad, that the Taleban may consider handing over bin Laden, prime suspect in the September 11 terrorist attacks in the US, either to China or to Saudi Arabia.

A special envoy of the Chinese government met Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf on Tuesday, the sources added.

The Pakistan delegation included ISI deputy director Major General Faiz Gilani and Additional Foreign Secretary Aziz Khan.

Pakistan's leaders discussed the Taleban proposal on Tuesday, the sources disclosed. The Pakistani delegation is likely to visit Afghanistan in the next day or two with Islamabad's response.

By Tuesday night, 846 clerics had reached Kabul where the much-publicised meeting of the Shura is scheduled to take place on Wednesday; 144 clerics are still missing.
