Indian embassy condemns attacks on Sikhs

The attacks on Sikhs in the United States following Tuesday's terrorist attacks have been condemned by the Indian embassy in Washington and the newly appointed President's Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

"The embassy would like to emphasise that the Sikhs are a law abiding, peaceful and progressive community from India. They are adherents of a modern, open and democratic faith. Their outward appearance, which is a manifestation of their religious beliefs, has made them victims of mistaken identity," the embassy said in a statement.

"Along with other Indians, they themselves have been targets of terrorism, and have been known for acts of great heroism," it said.

"The Embassy of India has seen press reports regarding harassment of members of the Sikh community and other Indians in the wake of the terrorists attacks in New York and Washington DC. The Indian consulates have been asked to take up any such cases of harassment with the local civic authorities," it said.

Meanwhile, the President's Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders denounced reported attacks of retaliation aimed at innocent Arab, Muslim and Asian Americans around the country.

Dr John B Tsu, AAPI's chairman-designate said, "As the president has said, this is a test of our great nation. We call on all Americans to show solidarity, not against a particular religious or ethnic group but against terror itself and against the specific organisations and individuals who bear responsibility for these tragedies."
