US Congress to meet on Wednesday

A correspondent in New York

The United States Congress will meet on Wednesday, against the backdrop of Tuesday's terrorist attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, steeled in its resolve to show that the attack on the government has not shut it down.

At a Congressional briefing on Tuesday, Rep Dennis Hartert, the House speaker, said Senators and members of the House, Republicans and Democrats stand shoulder to shoulder to make sure the perpetrators of the crime will pay the price. "We have our suspicions, and once they are justified we will stand together with the President, with this government," Rep Hartert said.

Sen Tom Daschle, the majority leader, said the government's resolve had not been weakened "by this cowardly act".

"The Congress will convene on Wednesday, and will speak with one voice. We will commit our full efforts to bring those responsible to justice. We stand behind the President, and ensure that our full resources are brought into these efforts."

At the end of the briefing, members of the House and Senate spontaneously broke into a rendition of 'God bless America'.
