Work of restoring air traffic in US begins

Our Correspondent in Washington

After almost 30 hours of no flights taking off or landing anywhere in the United States of America, some airports were reopened and air traffic was being selectively restored.

Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta said security around airports would be far tighter now, with more officers being deployed and many more physical checks. Vehicles around airports would be monitored closely and armed 'air marshals' would be deployed.

Under the new regulations issued by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, no knives, not even plastic knives, will be allowed on any commercial passenger flights in the US. Neither will kerbside check-ins be allowed. No person without a valid ticket will be allowed past metal detectors installed at the airports.

Referring to other modes of transport, Mineta said the bridges connecting Manhattan with New York City continue to remain closed to regular traffic. But the New York subway is now 90 per cent operational, except in the area where the World Trade Centre stood.

The subway in Washington is also functioning normally as are the Greyhound bus services.
