NY mayor warns of 'horrific' toll

With New York City mayor Rudolph Giuliani speaking of "horrific" casualty figures in Tuesday's terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre, the attention is slowly shifting to computing the toll.

As of 20:00 hrs EDT, some 78 NYPD officers have been reported missing, and 265 firefighters - including the fire chief and his deputy - have been reported killed in the WTC disaster. A further 266 have been reported killed in the four aircraft that crashed at various places, including 233 passengers, 25 flight attendants and 8 pilots.

After a long period of silence, the Pentagon has admitted to the loss of 800 lives in the attack on America's military nerve centre.

While it is not known how many people were inside the WTC when the attack occurred, a rough idea of the numbers involved can be had from the fact that Morgan Stanley, whose office was the largest in the complex, had 3500 workers.

Further, rescue workers report that there are many still trapped in the buildings near the World Trade Centre. The police commissioner's office meanwhile has denied that people are trapped alive under the debris of the WTC.
