Kanishka bombing accused appeals against extradition from Britain

Ajit Jain in Toronto

Inderjit Singh Reyat, who's charged with mass murder in the June 1985 bombing of Air India's Kanishka aircraft, has appealed against the British government's decision to allow Canadian authorities to arrest him in June.

Reyat has both Canadian and British citizenship.

Reyat's defense lawyer Gurpreet Garcha has reportedly lodged an application with the high court in London challenging the decision by British home secretary to permit Canadian officials to charge Reyat with murder.

It could take months for the British government to decide on this appeal.

However, Geoffrey Gaul, a spokesman for the British Columbia crown attorneys in the Air India case, says they are not aware of any such appeal.

This means that Reyat's case, in the British Columbia supreme court, would commence in February next year as scheduled.

Reyat was charged in June this year in the Kanishka case after he finished his 10-year jail term in connection with a blast at Tokyo's Narita airport in which two baggage handlers were killed.
