India to gift $1 million worth of anthrax antidotes to US

The Cabinet Committee on Security on Friday decided to gift the United States $1 million worth of anthrax antidotes, through relevant diplomatic channels, in the wake of the anthrax scare in America, External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh said.

Briefing reporters on the outcome of the CCS meeting at the prime minister's residence, Singh pointed out that the prime minister took this crucial decision, and also decided to gift one million tons of wheat to Afghanistan to be used for feeding the refugees. A decision was also taken to extend a Rs 50 million line of credit to the post-Taleban regime in Afghanistan to assist in reconstruction efforts.

The minister, however, pointed out that India plans to shift the assistance for the refugees through Iran, after Pakistan had refused passage citing lack of storage space.

According to Singh, the Indian pharmaceutical company Ranbaxy, which manufactures the anthrax antidote, would supply it if the US Food and Drug Administration approves it.
