US arrests 1986 hijacking suspect

US authorities have taken custody of Zayd Hassan Abd Al-Latif Masud Al Safarani, accused in the September 5, 1986 hijacking of a Pan American World Airways flight.

Al Safarani was released from a Pakistan jail on Friday, and immediately arrested by US officials.

As per an agency report in Kashmir Times, Safarini will appear before a US District Court in Alaska to face hijacking charges.

Safarini and five others were charged in 1991 with hijacking the Pan Am flight. The crew managed to escape, leaving 379 passengers in the hands of the hijackers.

An Indian-American, Rajesh Kumar, wsa killed by the hijackers to underline their demands that the flight crew should return. Subsequently, the hijackers fired on the passengers and flung hand grenades that resulted in the death of 21 others including another Indian-American, Surendra Patel.
