NA demand for talks adjournment turned down by other delegates, UN

The United Nations and rival Afghan groups have turned down the Northern Alliance's demand for adjournment of the power-sharing talks now in progress in Bonn (Germany) to enable the delegates to confer with the leadership back home.

Head of the Northern Alliance delegation Younus Qanooni wanted the talks to be adjourned to enable his delegation to return to Kabul to confer with the top leadership over its list of names for a interim supreme council, sources said.

This was opposed by delegates of other groups and also the United Nations.

Delegates of other groups were complaining that the Northern Alliance was proving to be the main hurdle in the path to reaching an agreement over power-sharing in Afghanistan.

The interim supreme council is to comprise of 120 to 200 members. Discussions for the formation of yet another interim body - a cabinet-style body - are yet to begin.

The latter body will have members holding portfolios - like defence, finance, etc.

Observers expect some hard bargaining on the distribution of portfolios and on who will head the cabinet-style body.
