Taleban recapture Spin Boldak: Report

In yet another indication that the Taleban is down but not out, a report in the Pakistani newspaper Dawn said the Islamic militia has recaptured the strategic town of Spin Boldak on Tuesday, after surrender talks with local tribal chieftains apparently collapsed.

The report said that commanders of Asmat militia and Wakil Samad Noorzai -- two local militia groups -- were talking to the Taleban for surrendering the town.

Quoting sources the report added that the Islamic militiamen have occupied vantage positions in the town armed with heavy weaponry.

The Takhta Pul area of the town witnessed fierce gunbattles between forces loyal to Taleban and those against it.

Elsewhere, a senior Taleban official Mulla Najeebulla claimed his forces have recaptured the Kandahar airport from the Pushtoon tribesmen allied to Hamid Karzai and Gul Agha - the former Kandahar governor.

"We attacked the tribesmen's positions in Takhta Pul and captured the area down to Kandahar airport," Dawn quoted Mullah Najibullah as saying.
