British marine commandos fly in to Afghan air base

In the first British ground mission to Afghanistan since the US-led strikes began on October 7, more than 40 royal marine commandos flew in from the Gulf to join forces guarding the Bagram airbase near Kabul, The Times reported.

The report quoted officials of the British defence ministry.

The troops were airlifted from HMS Fearless.

They are taking over the role of guarding the airfield from marine special forces of the elite Special Boat Service, who will now be given a different role more appropriate to their training, according to The Times.

However, a defence ministry spokesman was quoted as saying: "It is a rotation of troops. The Royal Marines have replaced those who have been out there to give them a rest."

The total number of British military personnel in Bagram was now about 130, The Times said.
