Northern Alliance troops enter Kunduz

Northern Alliance troops on Sunday entered Kunduz, the Taleban's last stronghold in northern Afghanistan, ending a two-week standoff, the Afghan Islamic Press (AIP) reported.

The Pakistan-based news agency said that ethnic Uzbek commander Abdul Rashid Dostum's troops had taken control of the city.

On Saturday, a Northern Alliance spokesman had said that more than 1,700 Taleban militiamen had surrendered after days of negotiations between the warring parties.

Meanwhile, addressing a press conference in Kabul on Sunday, Afghanistan's President Burhanuddin Rabbani guaranteed the security and safety of foreigners surrendering along with Taleban militiamen.

he said that Arabs, Pakistanis and Chechens who have been fighting alongside the Taleban troops would not be 'harassed'.

"They will be pardoned if they put down their guns," he said.

Rabbani also said that members of the Taleban militia could participate in a transitional Afghan government in their 'individual' capacity.
