30 US commandos killed: Taleban

At least 30 United States commandos had been killed in a clash with the Taleban in Afghanistan's southern province of Kandahar, militia sources claimed.

The Taleban said five of their soldiers were killed in a clash on Friday night, SADA reported.

The commandos allegedly came under heavy Taleban attack as soon as helicopters dropped them in Kandahar. The choppers immediately flew back to rescue the men.

There was no confirmation of the casualties from the US side.

Sources in the Pakistani city of Jacobabad had confirmed unusual movement of US helicopters from the airport there, which was being used by the allied forces for rescue operations.

It was believed that the US troops were on a rescue mission in Afghanistan.

However, a Pentagon spokesman termed the story as "absolutely false" and said, "We do not have any soldiers killed in Afghanistan on Thursday."

He said so far, the US had had no combat casualties in Afghanistan. "This is one more example of the lies the Taleban continue to tell," he added.
