Taleban launches onslaught against Mazar-e-Sharif

The Taleban has launched an offensive to regain the strategic northern Afghan town of Mazar-e-Sharif even as the militia withdrew from the Logar and Uruzgan provinces in the face of a Northern Alliance advance, Online reports.

Reports from Mazar-e-Sharif spoke of clashes between Taleban and Northern Alliance soldiers in the suburbs of the strategic city that had fallen to the alliance forces on Saturday.

Uruzgan is the ancestral province of Taleban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar, who is believed to have fled to Pakistan.

The Afghan Islamic Press on Wednesday quoted local residents of Pol-e-Alam and Terincot, the capital cities of the two provinces, as saying that the Taleban forces had retreated toward Kapesa and Kandahar.

Al-Jazeera TV correspondent Al-Shawli told mediapersons here after arriving from Kandahar that the Taleban was also putting up stiff resistance in the town and were not prepared to give up easily.

Kandahar is the headquarters of the Taleban.

Civic conditions in the city were deteriorating and hospitals were running out of medicines, exposing the people to tremendous hardships, he said.

Al-Shawli said Northern Alliance forces had briefly held Namroz airport, located 20 km from Kandahar, but were forced to retreat after the Taleban counterattacked.

The Taleban also appeared to have chalked out a fresh war strategy, Al-Shawli said.

The Qatar-based TV station had shifted base to Kandahar after the destruction of its Kabul office in US air raids Monday, Al-Shawli said.
