Red Cross denies receiving body of US commando

Red Cross officials in Pakistan have denied receiving the body of a US commando, who reportedly died at a hospital in the Afghanistan city of Kandahar, SADA reports.

Afghanistan's ruling Taleban claimed to have captured the American, John Bolton. He had reportedly identified himself as Major Mohammad Ayub but failed to convince the militia, which accused him of spying for Washington.

A Taleban official had said on Monday that the body of Bolton, who Taliban sources on Sunday claimed died of kidney failure in Kandahar, was handed over to the Red Cross and was expected in Quetta in a day or two.

Red Cross officials said they had got a forensic report of the killed commando even though the Taleban claim Afghan hospitals are incapable of holding such tests.

Taleban official Maulvi Hammad earlier said more than 20 US commandos, accused of spying, were being held by the Taleban.

Meanwhile, an agency report quoting the United States embassy in Pakistan claimed the person who died in Afghanistan was not an American citizen.

"We've determined that the individual involved is not an American," an embassy spokesperson was quoted as saying.

"I think we know who the individual is, and we've determined that he is probably a Pakistani national," the spokesperson said.
