Reports from the NWFP town of Peshawar, where Ahmad was kept under house arrest, said that cases of rebellion have been registered against him for arousing public sentiment against Pakistan's armed forces.
Ahmad was detained at his residence in Peshawar on Saturday. However, he telephonically addressed a protest rally in Bajour Aency.
Ahmad is the second prominent religious leader to be kept under house detention. Fazlur Rehman, leader of the Jamiat-e-Ulema Islami has been under house detention for the past few weeks.
Besides placing Ahmad under house arrest, police also barred 27 hardline Islamic clerics from entering the NWFP, which borders Afghanistan. There were asked not to reside, remain or enter the province for a period of 30 days.
Ahmad, who has been publicly campaigning for the ouster of President Pervez Musharraf for following a pro-US policy, threatened to hold a long march to Islamabad on November 9 to press for the resignation of the government.
The pro-Taleban Afghan Defence Council, in which almost all the hardline religious parties are members, has called for observance of a 'National Disobedience Movement' from November 9, the day Musharraf is scheduled to leave for New York to take part in the United Nations General Assembly and to hold talks with US President George Bush.
