US jet shot down, says Taleban

The Taleban on Thursday said it had shot down an American aircraft near the city of Mazar-e-Sharif.

Taleban sources in the eastern city of Jalalabad told a new agency that the plane, which crashed in Char Bolak district of Balkh province near the border with Uzbekistan, was brought down by anti-aircraft fire

They said the plane was hit during a day of air raids over Mazar-e-Sharif, the capital of Balkh. Char Bolak is some 40 km to the west.

The US, however, denied the Taleban claim.

"No US plane was shot down," Pentagon spokeswoman Victoria Clarke said.
