US marines in Afghanistan put on heightened alert

American marines in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar were placed on high alert from Sunday night, amid reports of possible suicide attacks by renegade Taliban and Al Qaeda elements.

A report in Star News also said that 20 captured Al Qaeda fighters have looked themselves in a hospital in the city, reportedly threatening to blow themselves up if they weren't not allowed to go to Pakistan unharmed.

Though US commander Dave Cullers was quoted by a report as saying that the decision was 'precautionary' and 'not in response to a specific threat', intelligence reports had earlier suggested that Taliban militiamen and Al Qaeda fighters might attack American troops after Christmas.

Some 2,000 US Marines are in Afghanistan as part of the campaign to hunt down Saudi-born militant leader Osama bin Laden and members of his Al Qaeda network.

Meanwhile, US fighter jets renewed their bombing of Tora Bora caves, even as reports suggested that Osama bin Laden might have died during the bombing. One unconfirmed report said that the Saudi renegade has died due to lung infection, while another said that he has escaped to Iran.

Both the reports could not be independently confirmed.
