Peace force in Kabul by Saturday: US envoy

The United States special representative to Afghanistan, James Dobbins, on Monday said troops of an international peacekeeping force would start landing in the Afghan capital of Kabul from Saturday (December 22) onwards, the day Afghan interim government headed by Hamid Karzai would take over the reins of power.

"I anticipate that at least the lead elements of it (the UN-mandated force) would be here," Dobbins was quoted as saying by a report.

The peacekeeping contingent would not be large, Dobbins said, adding that it would be 'enough' for all operations needed to maintain peace.
