1,000 bodies litter area around Kandahar airport: Report

Close to 1,000 bodies litter the area around Kandahar airport, which witnessed heavy US bombing and fierce fighting between Taliban militiamen and Afghan opposition forces in the last few weeks, humanitarian sources citing witnesses said on Tuesday.

One source quoted by a news report said, "The fighting was very fierce and lasted for a long time. We believe that this figure of a thousand dead is not unrealistic."

The one-time stronghold and spiritual headquarters of the Taliban has several airports, including a civilian one, where the bodies are reportedly rotting.

Meanwhile, the International Committee of the Red Cross, said it would start burying the bodies starting Tuesday.

An ICRC spokesperson speaking to a news agency said that already 100 graves have been dug.

The official said the location of burial sites have been chosen in consultation new governor of the Kandahar, Gul Agha, and military commander Mullah Naqibullah.
