Northern Alliance wants to retain charge of Kabul security

The Northern Alliance on Monday indicated that its troops would be in charge of Kabul city while the United Nations-mandated multinational peacekeeping force would protect government offices and important installations.

Alliance sources said Defence Minister Gen Mohammad Fahim, who will retain his post in the interim government, wanted the UN forces to enter the city only after the interim prime minister Hamid Karzai takes charge on December 22.

Under the agreement reached in Bonn (Germany) last week, a UN-mandated multination peacekeeping force is to be deployed in Kabul and its surroundings before spreading progressively to the rest of the country.

The agreement also stipulates that troops owing allegiance to various local commanders are to be withdrawn from the capital and other areas where the multinational force is to be deployed.
