Karzai to head Afghan interim government: Report

The United Nations-sponsored meeting of Afghan factions near Bonn, Germany, has yielded results with the delegates agreeing on Pushtoon leader Hamid Karzai to lead the interim government in Kabul.

The faction loyal to former king Mohammed Zahir Shah has changed its nomination and opted for Karzai, 44, who is presently fighting the Taleban troops around their southern stronghold of Kandahar, a delegate said on Tuesday.

Karzai replaces Abdul Sattar Sirat, an ethnic Uzbek, who was the camp's original choice, Mohammed Kazem Fazeli said.

"Karzai is the candidate for the Rome process," he told a news agency. "Sirat also wanted to head the interim government, but because of some reservations, it was decided that Karzai was more suitable," he said.

Reports said the candidacy of Sirat, a 63-year-old ex-minister, was apparently rejected by the United Nations and Northern Alliance chief negotiator Yunus Qanooni. They said it would shift the ethnic balance in the future administration in favour of the Northern Alliance, a coalition of ethnic Tajik, Hazara and Uzbek minorities.
