Israel blasts Palestinian cities in retaliation

In a devastating retaliation, Israeli army helicopters on Monday launched missile attacks on Yasser Arafat's private heliport in Gaza City in what Tel Aviv termed as a clear signal to the Palestine Liberation Organisation chairman to rein in the Islamic extremists who set off a series of deadly attacks in the heart of Israeli cities a day before.

Barely an hour later, Israeli F-16 fighter bombers struck on Palestinian security targets in the northern West Bank town of Jenin, described by Israel as a "hotbed of militants" while helicopters also hit Bethlehem.

Holding Arafat directly responsible for attacks on Israeli citizens, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon declared a war on terror, drawing an angry reaction from PLO.
