India ranked no. 10 on Network Solutions' dot com index list released recently.

In the list, comprising the countries which registered the most domain names in February, India stood 10th. It was in 11th place in 1998 and then fell to 12th in 1999, but has made it back as a leader in 2000. Incidentally, China ranked no. 7, inching up a notch from 1998.

Bombay was the only city in India appearing in the list. Other cities included Seoul, London, Toronto, Istanbul, Paris, Singapore, Beijing, Madrid and Vancouver.

Founded in 1979, Network Solutions pioneered the registration of Web addresses ending in .com, .net and .org. It is the world's leading registrar at www.networksolutions.com with more than 10 million registrations.

Network Solutions spokeswoman Janine Dunne told rediff.com: "For the second month in a row Asian Pacific cities have quickly adopted the dot com standard as Seoul, Singapore, Beijing and Mumbai hold top ten slots.

"We all know that China and India will be major Internet players and our domain registration numbers are proof positive of their emerging role."

Dunne believes that international domain name registrations provide a portrait of world Internet usage. "These are the regions where you are going to see the innovators, the new Internet businesses, the nerve centers of the new worldwide economy," she said.

As the central knowledge resource for the Internet with over 10 million domain names registered, Dunne continued, Network Solutions is in a position to supply this definitive information. "And because domain names are at the beginning of the Internet business process, this information is predictive that these regions will remain strong," she said.

Among the products and services offered by Network Solutions are dot com mail, a personal portable e-mail service; idNames, a country-specific Web address; ImageCafe, Web design service which offers professionally designed Web site templates for budget-conscious small businesses; dot com biz card, a customized page on the Internet for businesses; and dot com directory, one of the largest "find engines" on the Net for businesses.
