Netizens of Indian origin, take note! The first global Internet vote has begun at www.new7wonders.com

Needless to say, the Taj Mahal is one of the 17 sites on the list of the proposed 'New Seven Wonders of the World'.

The voting, which ends on September 30, is being held in collaboration with the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization and THE NEW 7 WONDERS project.

Among other contenders are the Great Wall of China, Lhasa's Potala Palace, the Old City of Sana'a (Yemen), Timbuktu (Mali), Hagia Sophia (Turkey), the Leaning Tower of Pisa (Italy), Doges's Palace (Italy), Aachen Cathedral (Germany), the Eiffel Tower (Paris), the Statue of Liberty (New York), Alhambra Palace (Spain), Versailles Palace and Park (France), the statues on Easter Island (Chile), the Kremlin and Red Square (Russia) and the Mayan pyramids (Mexico).

Also added by popular demand are the Church of La Sagrada Familia in Spain, the Sydney Opera House in Australia, the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, the Empire State Building in New York, Machu Picchu in Peru and Angkor Wat in Cambodia.

The project is the work of Bernard Weber, who has had a varied career as a filmmaker, museum curator, aviator and explorer. Fluent in five languages, the Swiss-born Weber has spent most of his life travelling the world and experiencing the rare sense of adventure that comes from meeting different cultures.

THE NEW 7 WONDERS project looks to preserve and protect the hundreds of heritage sites that epitomize great human achievements in architecture, design and engineering.
