Bangkok staged the Asian Games for the fourth time, from December 6 to 20, 1998. Earlier, the city had staged the fifth, sixth and eighth editions of the Games. Among 36 disciplines and two demonstration events, rugby and billiards and snooker were added. Squash made its second appearence at the Games after debuting in 1994. It was the largest Asian Games ever, with 9,469 athletes and officials from over 41 countries participating. The Games went smoothly without any major problem in the spirit of the motto: 'Friendship Beyond Frontiers'.
Afghanistan, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia did not participate.
India won the hockey gold medal after a 32-year lapse. They beat South Korea 4-2 via the tie-breaker in the final, after the teams were locked 1-1 even after extra-time.
