The torch relay was introduced as a new tradition at the Asian Games.

The Japanese gave a new meaning to "perfection" during this third Asiad, held in Tokyo, the capital of Japan. The organisation as well as the way the Japanese competed set new standards in the Asian continent.

At the opening ceremony on May 24, the Sacred Flame was ignited by Mikio Oda, the first Asian to win an Olympic gold medal, in the triple jump event at 1928 Amsterdam Olympiad.

Tennis, volleyball, table tennis and hockey were added to the disciplines while cycling staged a comeback. Competition was held in 13 disciplines, five more than in 1954.

The phrase "Ever Onward" was adopted as the official slogan.

India's Milkha "The Flying Sikh" Singh made his debut at the Games. He was outstanding in winning the 200 metres as well as the 400 metres, setting new Asian Games records in both.

This event established the Games as a major international meeting for Asia.
