Mohammedan Sporting scored in quick succession after the break to beat JCT 2-0 in the ONGC I-League at Yuba Bharati Kriragan in Salt Lake on Saturday.
Mohammedan Sporting, on the other hand, came out from the relegation zone with 13 points, just ahead of Chirag United on basis of goal difference.
JCT remained on 16 points.
Jothi Kumar produced a brilliant goal to give Mohammedan Sporting lead in 73rd minute.
Mike Okoro made no mistake in converting the penalty in 79th minute to help the Shabbir Ali-coached ensure three points from the match.
The Punjab outfit dominated the match and had better ball possession, but failed to convert their chances.
After the break, Mohammedan Sporting stepped up their momentum.
The first chance to take the lead for Mohammedan came in 56th minute when Jothi Kumar received the ball inside the box and was left unmarked, but his shot was off the target.
Making amends to his mistake, Jothi gave Mohammedan Sporting 1-0 lead with a cross inside the box from the right flank.
He tapped it past the JCT custodian Karanjit Singh. Seven minutes later, Jothi was brought down inside the box and Mohammedan were awarded a penalty.
Okoro had no problem as Mohammedan registered their only third victory after 14 matches.
