Ghanaian footballer Yusif Yakubu would play for East Bengal on loan for a year after tendering an unconditional apology to Salgaocar Sports Club for rescinding his contract signed earlier with the Goan club.

The East Bengal officials managed to get Yakubu after two rounds of negotiations with Salgaocar today after paying a compensation of Rs 7 lakh to the Goan club.

Consequently, Yakubu is now officially on-loan transfer to East Bengal for a year.

"All the foreigners need to know that they can't take the Goan clubs, in particular, and Indian clubs, in general, for granted," AJ Gomes, Secretary of Salgaocar Sports Club, said.

"It's for the first time that we have got the foreigners in place," Gomes added.

Also, an amount of Rs 10 lakh that Yakubu had availed from Salgaocar was returned by the player, Gomes said adding the amount came in three demand drafts on Friday.

Earlier, in a letter to the general secretary of salgaocar, Yakubu said, "I express my unconditional apology to the management of Salgaocar sports club for having deserted and not playing for the club despite being selected, contracted and having a subsisting and binding contract and been cleared and declared as a non-amateur football player of Salgaocar by the All India Football Federation by virtue of inter state registration transfer to play for the club."
