Indian shuttlers make good start in Hong Kong

Arvind Bhatt stunned world No 8 Joachim Persson of Denmark as Indians made a resounding start at the Hong Kong Super Series badminton championships. All their shuttlers won their first round singles matches on Wednesday.

Beijing [ Images ] Olympics [ Images ] quarter-finalist Saina Nehwal [ Images ] staved off the challenge of Thailand's Salakjit Ponsana, winning 21-19, 22-20 in 33 minutes.

Bhatt then pulled off a stunner, beating sixth seed Persson 21-17, 21-17 to advance to the second round.

Persson could not negotiate the smashes of Bhatt and the world No 41 wrapped the match in just 29 minutes.

Chetan Anand [ Images ] also made it to the next round, but, unlike Bhatt, had to break some sweat before overcoming Czech Petr Koukal 21-18, 17-21, 21-13 in a 50-minute battle.

India [ Images ] had just one disappointment when Saina and her doubles partner Anna Rice of Canada [ Images ] were handed a 16-21, 11-21 defeat by the Malaysian duo of Chiou Hwee Haw and Pek Siah Lim in 27 minutes.
