Mike Okoro struck in the 40th minute to earn Mohammedan Sporting a 1-0 win over a resilient Peerless in the IFA premier division football league game at Barasat in North 24 Parganas district on Wednesday.
Collecting a through pass near the top of Peerless box, Okoro dribbled past a rival defender and the goalkeeper before placing the ball home.
Sporting, which had finished fifth in 2007 league, now jointly lead the table along with Mohun Bagan wih six points. Peerless, who were fourth last year, are yet to open their account after playing three matches.
Peerless improved their performance as compared to their last two matches against George Telegraph and Mohun Bagan and fought almost on equal terms, especially in the second half.
Just before the long whistle, Peerless almost earned an equaliser but Dipak Singh's shot off a combined move narrowly missed the target.
