Italian coach Giovanni Trapattoni is to leave Salzburg at the end of the season to become manager of Ireland's national side, his Austrian club said on Wednesday.

The former Italian national coach has agreed a two-year contract with the Football Association of Ireland (FAI), Salzburg said in a statement.

Trapattoni's appointment was due to be officially confirmed by the FAI following a board meeting later on Wednesday.

"My main goal now is to win the Austrian title as a farewell present (for Salzburg)," Trapattoni was quoted as saying on Salzburg's Web site (www.redbulls.com). He won the Austrian title with Salzburg last season.

According to a report in the Irish Independent this week, the FAI will be paying Trapattoni up to two million euros ($2.91 million) a year.

Trapattoni, 68, has won seven Serie A crowns with Juventus and Inter Milan, a German Bundesliga title with Bayern Munich and a Portuguese championship with Benfica.

His European honours include the European Cup, three UEFA Cups and a Cup Winners' Cup triumph during his time at Juventus and Inter.
