Spearheaded by a brace from Ghanain Yusif Yakubu, Mahindra United outclassed Goan outfit Sporting Clube-de-Goa 3-0 in an ONGC I-League football match at the Cooperage Ground in Mumbai on Saturday.
Yakubu scored the first two goals for the local giants in the 31st and 51st minutes of play to put Mahindra on top as the hosts rounded off the tally in the 75th minute through Sushant Mathew's effort.
The Ghanaian striker gave Mahindra the lead when he headed in a cross from the right from N P Pradeep, the ball slipping through goalkeeper Luis Baretto's hands into the goal.
Yakubu scored his second from close range off a short pass from the other African import, Andrews Mensah, from inside the penalty box.
Mensah got the ball via a cross from Mahindra captain Steven Dias.
The third goal for Mahindra was the result of a defensive clearance by Philip Gomes off a free-kick by Dias. The ball came to Mathew who tapped it in.
The victory boosted Mahindra's tally to 24 but still left them standing in fifth position while the Goan outfit remained seventh in the table with 17 points.
Mahindra next take on local rivals Air India here next week.
