Newcastle United collected their first away league win of the season on Sunday when goals from Michael Owen, Obafemi Martins and Danny Guthrie earned them a 3-0 victory at Portsmouth.
The game was evenly fought in the first half though Newcastle went closest when Martins struck a post with a vicious 25 yard strike after 20 minutes.
They went ahead after 51 minutes when Jonas Gutierrez picked out Owen with an incisive pass and the striker bravely dinked the ball over the advancing David James before being flattened by his former England team mate.
The second came after 76 minutes when Jose Enrique advanced into the box and set up Martins, who sidestepped James before tucking the ball beyond him.
Newcastle threw away a 2-0 lead last week when they drew 2-2 at home with Stoke City but, though Jermain Defoe twice went close, they held out this time and added a third when Danny Guthrie swept in a first-time shot through the hands of James.
The victory lifted them to 19 points and out of the bottom three while Portsmouth, who had not lost in their previous five league games, stay eighth.
