Vicente Rodriguez scored in the 81st-minute to give Valencia a 3-2 victory over Real Madrid in the first leg of the Spanish Supercup.

Juanma Mata and David Villa also netted in the 56th and 59th for Valencia, whose win marked a good start for new coach Unai Emery in his first official match in charge on Sunday.

Ruud van Nistelrooy scored Madrid's goals in the 14th and 68th minutes.

Valencia's victory at its Mestalla Stadium improves its hopes of winning the trophy -- played annually by the league champions and Copa del Rey winners. They travel to Madrid for the return leg on August 24.

Madrid was lacking injured defender Fabio Cannavaro and midfielder Wesley Sneijder.
