Mangal Singh Champia set alight the Olympic Green Archery Field to finish second in a field of 64 in the ranking round, which won him an easy draw in the elimination stage which starts on August 13.
India's lone male archer in Beijing Olympics finished just one point behind Mexican Juan Serrano who topped the chart scoring 679.
The archer from Jamshedpur looked in scintillating touch as he shot 342 in the first half to lead the field before adding 336 in the second to slip a rung and finish overall second.
"In the second half, there was heavy wind and it was not continuous either, so I did not do that well," he later said.
"I had a good feeling today. I checked the wind and saw where it went before I aimed off to shoot," he said.
