Delhi teenager Yuki Bhambri pulled off a major upset at $ 10,000 ITF men's event by defeating Chinese Davis Cupper Peng Sun in straight sets to storm into the singles quarter-finals in Chandigarh on Wednesday.
The 15-year-old Yuki stunned the 24-year-old Sun 6-4, 6-2 in a second round match at the CLTA Complex.
This is one of the best wins for Yuki in his career, as Sun is a tough player to beat and has seven ITF Futures title to his credit. Yuki is ranked 1679 while Sun is ranked 487 in the charts.
Yuki said he was not expecting a victory and rather wanted to play with confidence.
"I knew it would be a tough match. I wanted to enjoy the game and play with confidence. I succeeded in staying long at the court.
"I wanted to be steady and made him commit errors, which paid off," he told PTI after the match.
It was a good day for other Indians in the fray as top seed Rohan Bopanna, Divij Sharan and Harsh Mankad also advanced to the quarterfinal stage.
Davis Cupper Bopanna beat Thailand's Peraklat Siriluethaiwattana 6-3, 6-3 in his second round match while Sharan pipped compatriot Ranjeet Virali Murugesan with the same margin.
Former Davis Cupper Mankad came from behind to defeat seventh seed Japanese Kento Takeuchi 4-6, 6-0, 6-1.
