World champion Manavjit Singh Sandhu lived up to his top billing to clinch the gold medal in the men's trap event at the Asian Clay Shooting championship in Manila.

The ace Indian marksman pipped Almudahf Khaled of Kuwait in the tie-shoot after the two fired an identical score of 138 on Friday.

Sandhu was joint second with 118 points after the qualifying rounds while Khaled was leading with 120 points. But Sandhu shot an excellent final round of 20 while his Kuwaiti opponent managed only 18 which resulted the match being stretched to a tie-breaker, in which Sandhu hit two bird to his opponent's one.

The Punjab shooter was joint second with compatriots Zorawar Singh Sandhu (118+19) and Anwer Sultan (118+17), who eventually finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Singapore's Lee Wang Yew had to be content with the bronze medal despite being the highest scorer with 21 points in the final round as it was not enough to make up for his poor show in qualifying where he managed only 116 points.

In the women's event held on Thursday, India's Shagun Chowdhry managed to get a place in the final six but finished last with the scores of 75 (60+15).

China's Zhou Mei won the gold medal by scoring 86 (67+19) while Japan's Keiko Suzu 83 (62+21) claimed the silver.

Chinese Ma Huike 82 (65+17) won the bronze medal after edging past Zhu Zhao 82 (66+16) in a tie shoot.
