Adebayor gets extra one match

Arsenal's Togo striker Emmanuel Adebayor was given an extra one-match ban on Friday after his red card in the brawl which marred the League Cup final defeat by Chelsea. Adebayor, who was also fined 7,500 pounds ($14,490) by an FA disciplinary commission hearing, was found guilty of a charge of reacting aggressively and failing to leave the field of play immediately after being dismissed.

He had denied the charge and his view had been strongly backed by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, who said a linesman had lied in his match report by saying the Togolese forward had punched Chelsea's Frank Lampard.

Wenger was subsequently asked by the FA to explain those remarks and the English game's ruling body said on Friday it had received an answer from the Frenchman.

"Wenger's response will now be considered and no further comment can be made at this time," the FA said on its Web site (www.thefa.com).

In giving a one-match ban, the FA said it "had taken into account Adebayor's playing record and the mitigation offered".

Adebayor's red card came amid a fracas in which Ivorian team mate Kolo Toure, Arsenal captain on the day, and Chelsea's Nigerian midfielder John Obi Mikel were also dismissed.

Arsenal's other Ivorian defender, Emmanuel Eboue, was later given a three-match ban for violent conduct, having struck Chelsea defender Wayne Bridge during the melee.

Arsenal and Chelsea have admitted a charge of failing to control their players and/or officials at the final.

Both clubs have requested personal hearings which will be scheduled in due course, the FA said.
