Riding on a brace of goals from Anthony Pereira and Ranty Martins, Dempo thrashed Mohammedan Sporting 5-0 to garner their first full points in the 11th ONGC National Football League, in Duler, Goa, on Friday.
Dempo, who led 3-0 at half-time, scored through Anthony Pereira (1st, 41st minute), Ranty Martins (11th, 67th) and substitute Peter Carvalho (83rd).
In another NLF match in Mumbai, Air India scored in the dying minutes to hold Spoerting Clube de Goa 1-1.
Naredra Meetei scored in added time to restore parity to Dudu Omaghbemi's 62nd minute strike.
Dempo, who lost to Mahindra United in their opening match, were offensive from the start and took an early lead in the first minute through a defensive lapse.
A long kick by Dempo's keeper Satish Kumar into the rival box saw rival 'keeper Gopal Das and defender Madhab Kumar Das fail to clear the ball and in a misunderstanding, the loose ball fell on the path of Anthony Pereira, who tapped it into the net.
Dempo dominated thereafter and increased the lead in the 11th minute. Medio Climax Lawrence set up Clifford Miranda on the left flank, who in turn relayed the ball to Anthony Pereira; the latter sent a deep goalmouth cross which beat the defence. Ranty Martins, who was left unmarked, guided the ball in from close.
With four minutes left for the interval, Anthony Pereira scored again. Martins, who combined well with Anthony upfront, set up defender Valerian Rebello, who moved up on the right, and sent a measured cross to Anthony Pereira who controlled the ball and took a shot at the goal; the ball hit the upright before entering the net to give Dempo a 3-0 cushion at the break.
The home side called the shots in the second session too. Martins got his second goal in the 67th minute before Carvalho could complete the rout seven minutes from time.
Anthony Pereira was adjudged the man of the match.
