Mahesh Bhupathi and his Croatian partner Mario Ancic's eight-match winning streak ended when they crashed out of the St Petersburg Open after losing 6-2, 6-7, 3-10 to the Austrian-South African pair of John Stephens and Wesley Moodie in the quarter-finals.

Playing together in only their third ATP tournament, the Indo-Croatian pair, which had stunned third seeds Jonas Bjorkman and Thomas Johansson in the first round, lost the plot after winning the opening set and bowed out of the $1m indoor event.

They had won back-to-back titles in Beijing and Mumbai.
